If you know, you know... The patchwork design of Sally's dress is iconic and perfect to celebrate Halloween or Christmas. Why not, right?

Brightly colored cookie dough rolled together and stitched with chocolate stitches for a delightful fun and vibrant sugar cookie recipe that is soft and delicious.

Sally Stitches Cookies Nightmare Before Christmas Cookies

Jack Skellington would definitely approve of these Halloween Cookies recipe. So let me dive in and help you make them too.

I'm using my favorite Vanilla Cookie Recipe. It's a no chill sugar cookie recipe that makes perfectly soft sugar cookies everyone loves.

And with a couple tips you can make Sally Patches cookies with fake stitches made from chocolate too.

    Sally Stitches Cookies

Sally Cookies can even be flavored with a variety of extracts of your choosing. Maybe you love Almond, it's a quick substitution of Almond extract.

Ingredients Needed for Sally Sugar Cookies

Dry Ingredients. Granulated Sugar, All Purpose Flour, Powdered Sugar, Baking Soda, Cream of Tartar

Wet Ingredients. Butter, Egg, Vegetable Oil, Vanilla Extract

Other Ingredients. Chocolate Chips or Chocolate Wafers melted, Food Coloring: Purple, Pink, Teal, Yellow.

How to make Sally Stitches Cookies

Gather the ingredients needed along with a few supplies like a large mixing bowl, electric hand mixer, measuring spoons and measuring cups. Baking sheets, cooling rack, spatula and silicone scraper.

I have used Gel Coloring to achieve the bright vibrant colors. The colors look fantastic and works so much better than liquid drops.

I am using AmeriColor gel coloring in Hot Pink, Teal, Violet, and Yellow.

In a large mixing bowl cream softened butter with granulated sugar. Cream ingredients until light and fluffy. Mixture will turn a pale yellow color. Scrape sides of bowl as needed to include all ingredients.

Beat with an electric hand mixer or use a stand mixer at medium speed. Butter and sugar will become light, fluffy and a pale yellow in color.

Add egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined. Then drizzle Vegetable Oil into mixture and add Powdered Sugar.

In a medium bowl combine flour and baking soda and cream of tartar and combine. Gradually add dry ingredients to butter mixture a little at a time until fully combined.

Separate cookie dough into 4 equal parts. Color each part a different color of Sally's dress. Pink, Purple, Teal or Yellow.

Cookie dough separated into 4 bowls
    Color cookie dough
Separate cookie dough into 1 teaspoon portions
roll 4 pieces together to make 1 larger cookie

Using separate bowls add a few drops of gel coloring and mix throughly adding additional color if needed to reach a bright vibrant color.

To make patchwork cookies, use 1 teaspoon of each color and roll into a ball. Do not over mix cookie dough or colors will blend together. Roll just enough to stick each color together into a ball.

Place cookie dough balls on baking sheet lined with parchment paper and gently press cookie dough into a disk.

Rolled cookie dough flattened for baking

Bake in a preheated oven for 7-9 minutes. Cookies are done when edges are set and center is puffy. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool on cookie sheet for a minute or two before transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

    Adding Stitches to Cookies

Once cookies have fully cooled it's time to place stitches on the seams of the cookies.

In a small bowl melt chocolate chips or chocolate wafers in microwave for 30 seconds. Stir mixture and heat for an additional 15 seconds and continue to stir. If more time is needed add 15 more seconds and stir until smooth.

Melted Dark Chocolate as stitches on cookies

Place melted chocolate in a piping bag or use a ZipLoc Bag and snip corner off. Pipe stitch lines on seams of cookies. Using lines as well as X's to sew colors together.

All chocolate to fully set before storing cookies.

    Storage and Freezing

Cookies should be fully cooled before storing or chocolate stitches will smear and become messy. Place parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking.

Cookies will stay fresh in a sealed container or in ZipLoc bag. Cookies are best if enjoyed within 2-3 days but will last up to a week on the counter.

Freeze Cookies up to 3 months when properly sealed in freezer.

    Substitutions and Additions

Extracts. As mentioned above substitute Almond Extract for Vanilla Extract. Or try Pumpkin flavoring for the holiday. Any extract can be used.

Decorating. I have used a dark chocolate chip for the stitches. Try purchased black icing in a tube for easy decorating.

Sally Stiches Nightmare Before Christmas Cookies

    Pro Tips

Softened Butter. Allow butter to sit on counter for 1 hour prior to using. This will soften butter just enough to cream nicely. Butter that has turned to mush has become too soft and will result in flat cookies.

Cookie Sheets. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mat. This helps for easy clean up.

Baking Time. Every oven bakes a little differently. Try a test batch with 2-3 cookies to test how the recipe bakes in your oven. Then bake the remaining cookies for the time determined from the test batch.

Cookies are done when edges are set and center is puffy and no longer glossy. Allow cookies to sit on cookie sheet for a minute or two before moving to baking rack.

Mixer. Using the paddle attachment is ideal when using a stand mixer but not necessary. A traditional beater will work for this recipe.

Food Coloring. I have used AmeriColor Gel coloring to achieve bright vibrant colors.

    Nightmare Before Christmas Cookies

    Sallys Baking Sugar Cookies

My family and friends love these Nightmare before Christmas Cookies. I think they bring smiles to everyone's face for the whimsical colors and patchwork stitching. Not to mention every cookie is a little bit different in pattern which is so fun.

These cookies are perfect for Halloween and can always be made to celebrate Christmas Too. Nightmare before Christmas Sugar Cookies will always be a hit and a delicious.

On a recent Disney Vacation I was able to meet Jack Skellington and he was hilarious with his goofy mannerism that everyone loved it.
